<image:caption>Cross-Pollination, Ascent, Theatre, Trippy, Peacemaker, Triumph acrylic, 18 x 24 each The focus of these paintings is hand-done form and color: both geometric abstraction and graphic representational design, as well as modulation of color, clear movement, and the human touch. I want to interpret, in a new way, the tradition of hand-painting. I'm influenced by folk art as much as by modern art. Working in acrylic on canvas results in a punch of color for me that I wouldn't be able to achieve in watercolor or oil. The matte simplicity is naïve, and the plasticity is modern.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PORTFOLIO - Scandinavian Series</image:title>
<image:caption>Prillarguri, acrylic 30 x 15 Varangian Trade Route, acrylic 30 x 24 Midnight Sun and Strawberries, acrylic 30 x 15 The focus of these paintings is hand-done form and color: geometric abstraction, modulation of color, graphic representational design, and the human touch. I was partly inspired by Scandinavian Rosemaling. I wanted to interpret, in a new way, the tradition of hand-painting, but to keep the continuity of certain elements, such as: flowing shapes derived from nature, uneven layering of paint, and the use of geometric scrolls, dots, and thick and thin forms, which are created by the skill of the human hand rather than a soul-less stencil/ template. Also in the tradition, the design springs from the person-- with brights or pastels juxtaposed against neutrals or darks. My palate is more modern, but not too far from a Scandinavian palette. There's an exuberance, but a contemplative moodiness as well, to the Scandinavian spirit. This series explores the Scandinavian quarter of my heritage. In the first painting, Prillarguri sounds the Prillar horn, warning the peasant town of the invading Scotts. In the second, Norse ships of the Varangian Trade Route float on the waterways toward new worlds, resulting ultimately in trade and cultural exchange with the Byzantine Empire and modern-day Ukraine. In the third painting, I explored the degree of light exposure. Depending how far north the location, Norway's midnight sun can bring thirty days to four months of glowing perpetual light during the summer. Norway is also known for their flavorful strawberries-- here they lighten the mood in the foreground.</image:caption>

<image:title>PORTFOLIO - Family Tree, Jukebox of My Genes</image:title>
<image:caption>Family Tree, Jukebox of My Genes acrylic, 18 x 24 Do you ever stand by a gravestone and notice it’s shaped like a jukebox? Do you hear the music they heard, smell the food they celebrated? Hear the laughter and the character of their humor? Do you know the hardships they overcame with that humor? If you don’t, maybe you should look into your family tree, or ask any living relative about those who came before. Not only may it surprise you, but it may answer many questions, such as why the diverse food and drink and music preferences of your family are such a puzzle. Why your heart pounds when your eyes see the land, sky, sea, or cityscape associated with where they came from, or where they arrived. I was born San Franciscan, but with roots in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Korea, Hawaii, Russia, France, Cherokee America, Scotland, Ireland, and England, my jukebox has many catchy tunes. On any day, I don’t know which one will be playing in my head. But it’s a party of ancestors.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Active Mind acrylic, 30 x 20 Every living thing enacts its character through posture, countenance, movement-- through the body. Women whose bodies are seen are seen as bodies. Some assume that the strength of a woman's intellect is inversely proportionate to the degree to which her body is exposed. Her mind is forgotten by the average viewer. People are less likely to make these automatic assumptions when they see unclothed men or animals. It is important to realise that there is intellectual activity, sensitivity, dreaming, and pensive planning that animates the body. Women are no exception.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PORTFOLIO - Children's Book: Urban Wildlife</image:title>
<image:caption>Meet the URBAN WILDLIFE of San Francisco: A Children's History of City Animals What are the stories of our wild animal neighbors? Where were their first homes? When did they first arrive in San Francisco? Have some of them lived here longer than the city itself? Meet the Urban Wildlife of San Francisco introduces children to the natural history of the city, focusing on seven animals: Raven, Skunk, Raccoon, Pigeon, Squirrel, Opossum, Conure. Meet the increasing variety of animals who have shared San Francisco, as it has changed and grown into the place we know today. Nine sample illustrations from the children's book, which has 40 illustrated pages total: Meet the Urban Wildlife of San Francisco is natural history for children ages four to eight. Most city animals came from other places, moved here over time, and are still coming here today. This book takes kids through the stages of San Francisco, from when it was Ohlone Native Land, to a Gold Rush town, to a Victorian city, to today. Local wildlife is shown in historical contexts by being anthropormorphized in the illustrations. Younger children will have a sense of the different eras and the different cultures from the visually engaging costumes. Older children can understand the timeline. This book tells the story of the animals who represent the spirit of the city. The dynamics of a changing city environment and its animal inhabitants is different for every place, so I've begun with my hometown San Francisco. A flux of wildlife is relevant in an urban setting. It acts as a metaphor for the human immigration which grows and sustains cities. Considering this concept through appealing animals supports neighborhood diversity from an early age. A natural history with animal protagonists not only fosters environmental sensitivity, and a better understanding of local history, but also encourages appreciation for how cities continue to be created through unique groups coming together, each with their own gifts.</image:caption>

Let’s choose the goodness.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PORTFOLIO - SHOW ME MAGIC</image:title>
<image:caption>SHOW ME MAGIC acrylic, 24 x 36 Many artists paint their desires, their hopes. I am pro-peace. Peace is seen as impractical by those who are intimidated by the work it requires. Magic is sometimes illusion, but when something is accomplished that was formerly thought impossible, that is also magical. What may look easy and beautiful often comes at a high cost of good practices. We’ve sacrificed so much for war, but can’t we, instead, actively work toward peace? If we want to survive financially, emotionally, and spiritually, we have to make the effort. I want to inspire others to break from the lock-step mode that has become a “tradition” of war. It begins with educating ourselves about peaceful alternatives.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PORTFOLIO - Are You Human?</image:title>
<image:caption>Are You Human? acrylic, 24 x 36 (magnifying glass hangs vertically at side; thumbprint in center of canvas) Most people identify themselves as human, but what does that mean? Physically we have certain traits— i.e. hands, opposable thumbs, finger prints— but what does it mean to think or to feel like a human? In “Are You Human?” I’m exploring conflicting factors in the human psyche. Culturally, we use fingerprints as an identifier. From one point of view, a fingerprint can identify a criminal. Are we, as humans, criminal in general? Doomed to repeat political and social injustices because we are flawed, being “only human?” Conversely, the fingerprint can also be a symbol for individuality. No two fingerprints are the same. People are not identical machines. We each have our own conscious mind and our own emotions. We can feel sympathy and empathy. Humans perform a balancing act, desiring to be unique, and also desiring to belong in a community. The hands represent interaction between people. Are we going to hurt each other, or help each other? Will we crucify each other, or will we heal each other? Political and cultural conflict between groups of people on a national scale, and genocide and wars between nations on a global scale, are examples of infighting between what is biologically one species—a species which is still developing what it means to be human and to share resources evenly. We are all in this together, and must draw on our optimistic ideas of humanity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PORTFOLIO - Buckets of Blood</image:title>
<image:caption>Buckets of Blood 40" wide x 69" high x 20" deep I’ve used whichever technique fit each part of this project. Painting: The stripes are painted on fabric. Assemblage: The stars are made from 50 milk or orange juice carton spouts, sewn to burlap. Sculpture: Pouring from the stars, large 3D blood drips are made from wire armature, plaster-wrap like that used in body casts, gel medium molding paste, and paint. Pen: The lettering on the reverse side of the project is written in permanent laundry marker sharpie on fabric. Green foam sheet and paper: the cartoon money below the bleeding flag has computer printed logos of the top U.S. defense contractors applied to the center of each foam sheet bill. Art can work best when a variety of materials are considered for a variety of purposes. Many people within younger generations are interested in retaining our humanity. This can branch into valuing what is hand-done, local, natural, or unedited, especially as there is a perception that these things may become rare in the future. For some people, this branches into how we see politics. We approach political subjects with the intent of honesty, rather than treating the subject in a glossed-over or glamorized way. The United States has continued to spend more money on the defense budget than any other country. The majority of U.S. discretionary spending is allocated for military use. We are also home to the biggest defense contracting company in the world, Lockheed Martin. With “Buckets of Blood,” I hope to bring attention to the mutilation and loss of life caused by this militarism. I hope to draw people’s attention with the visuals— visuals which can then ask, “What are the priorities of America?”</image:caption>

These palettes are a secondary product, not intentionally created to be seen. They're a result of my using plastic wrap around a plate as a space to mix paint for canvases. I later collected the palettes and photographed them. Palettes represent the process of making paintings, but they also represent an instinctive approach to color and form. There is little or no concern for representational depiction or for philosophical content in the colors and shapes. Palettes exist only for people to easily explore value, tone, and shade, through making their own mixtures and through making physical marks with a substance. This draws from the back of our minds-- from a part of our thinking process that is more involuntary and less focused. Palettes show unpremeditated expression through pigment. <image:caption>Class Assignment: Site-Specific Ephemeral Art (please SCROLL DOWN for 14 alternate views, showing bleach process and shaving cream) Peace movements emerge and grow and become clearer through time. The camouflage pattern represents the military and the obfuscatory lexicon which is used to camouflage the intent of invasions. Bleach was the method used to produce the emerging peace symbol on tissue paper which I cut and collaged onto coreboard. I used shaving cream in the second part of this project, because with coming of age also comes the threat of being drafted (for young men in America). The process of the bleach, the consistency of the shaving cream, and the effect on the tissue paper make this project ephemeral. I chose a recruiting center for the site of my piece.</image:caption>

<image:caption>close-ups of the women: close-ups of the symbolic fruit (wax) and cornucopias (plaster/wire) the clock (wire armature, plaster strips, a little stucco patch, white house paint, acrylic paint): original drawings of women which I drew with a mouse in a very basic computer SuperPaint program: "The Patriotic Way" plaster strips & wire armature, papier-mâché, foam core board, wax This represents American jingoistic support of the military industrial complex, and the gradual fading of that attitude as we acknowledge our mistakes. (Mistakes, e.g. roundup and torture in Guantánamo or Gitmo, redirecting the focus of our over-reaction into Iraq, skewed/fraudulent U.S. election practices, excessive surveillance of our civilian community and loss of some basic "guaranteed" rights-- all this has been more recognized in the recent past compared to the time directly following nine-eleven. Did I mention Haliburton, Enron, and other "missing money" problems?) The symbolic "fruits" by the cornucopia on the left represent our bounty; the rotten ones on the right hand side represent our waste. The woman is also younger on the left hand side and older on the right. I drew her in high school for a chapbook of poems I wrote during America's bombings in Afghanistan and war in Iraq. She represents the loss of glorification of a certain type of lifestyle/ belief system. She is flying through the center ring, which is a clock representing time. She is riding a missile which represents our penchant for spending money on destruction and pollution.</image:caption>

      <image:title>COLLEGE WORK - Let's Sin!</image:title>
<image:caption>Let's Sin! acrylic, 12 x 12 The emotional background to this picture was my thought that while original sin was Biblically attributed to women, our culture praises "naughtiness" in women. Does this have any relationship to reality? Do women get true representation in how female power is perceived or used? Rather than dwelling on the subjugation of women or on the praise of divas, when considering distortion of female power, I want to look at how different conclusions can be drawn from one image. Is this a traditional Eve? Or is this about fun? Is this a person eating an apple, and nothing out of the ordinary? Part of Who's Got the Ova series: preliminary sketch:</image:caption>

      <image:title>COLLEGE WORK - Barbarella on a Halfshell</image:title>
<image:caption>Barbarella on a Halfshell acrylic, 12 x 12 This derives from "The Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli and the 1968 tongue-in-cheek movie "Barbarella." The science-fiction character Barbarella was a 20th century Venus, being considered good, powerful, and sexually liberated. Venus is believed to have been based in earlier goddess religions which were replaced by patriarchal religions. The Venus or Barbarella kind of character would be surprisingly compatible with both the current society and those who are generally pro-women's rights. <image:title>COLLEGE WORK - Athena Minus the War/ Dreaming is Free</image:title>
<image:caption>Athena Minus the War/ Dreaming is Free acrylic, 12 x 12 Athena, Greek Goddess of Wisdom, Strategy, and Handcrafts, is shown here with her constructive symbols (owl – intelligence, olives— mythologically the olive tree was a gift to humans from Athena, horse— Athena was said to have promoted human-equine teamwork), rather than her destructive ones (spear, bellicose helmet). I wanted to focus on the positive, creative side of a mythological female archetype who is known for strength. Athena’s horse, olive branch, and owl are gestural and graphic, developing from fantasy. “The truth shall set you free,” while accurate, begs you to take some sort of constructive action, which requires creativity. There is power and freedom in creativity. As Deborah Harry says, “Dreaming is Free.” We dream it to distill a plan to produce something concrete. Athena was also patron to dressmakers. For a previous art project, I sewed the dress illustrated here. For me personally, this extends the handcraft association.</image:caption>

Is she fleeing her current situation, or is she learning to nurture? Is she in denial? Or is she embracing motherhood? Is she boxed-in by the gifts of her body and her intellect, or do they co-exist in balance? A blue moon and terra cotta tones evoke nature and sensual fertility. <image:caption>The Bather acrylic, 12 x 12 The woman's towel resembles an 18th century wig. It's typically assumed that women devote time to preparing their appearance. <image:caption>Strawberry acrylic, 18 x 24 When in doubt, look for the label beginning with “9,” which means a product is organic! Strawberries are one of the most pesticide-absorbent fruits when not grown organically. They are also one of the most nutritious when grown properly. This piece is a portrait of a particular strawberry. Its uniqueness and individuality echoes our uniqueness and the fact that, as individuals, we are responsible for making informed choices about what goes into our system. We need to support organic farming, in order to bring down the cost, so that everyone can get a shot at the good stuff and the health benefits that come with it. Non-organic farming has negative health repercussions for those who harvest and transport our fruit, and for those who ingest the pesticides along with the fruit, which is often included in processed, and in even so-called health, foods. Buy fresh. Buy organic. Support your organic farmers. Part of an Organic Fruit series:</image:caption>

Here, in the shape of a hand that’s making the sign for “love”, are the words “animal, plant, mineral”. Human hands have great potential for goodness or for destruction. Let’s choose the goodness.</image:caption>

      <image:title>CURRENT WORK - SHOW ME MAGIC</image:title>

      <image:title>CURRENT WORK - Are You Human?</image:title>

The stark ridiculously long pull-string shows how high we've put the bulb up on the ceiling, like a man-made mini-sun in the sky. A light bulb is a now common object that's changed our world. The positive side of this is that it's become a symbol for our ingenuity and for our curiosity, and for our freedom to explore beyond the circadian day. We can dance, read, and travel roads and skies by night. Our primordial torches live on today in energized glass.</image:caption>

<image:caption>DATE NIGHT IN THE CITY acrylic, 36 x 36 A change in perspective often begins with humor. I reinforce the freedom of humor with bright colors and unexpected details within expected traditions. If we want to change the entrenched sexist perspective in our world, it has to begin in the minds of women. The souls of men and women are essentially the same. The education the world has given them is not.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Between the Lines Plaster Wrap, Molding Paste, Acrylic, Varnish, Arches Watercolor Paper, sewn to 1-3/8” Profile Canvas 24” x 24” “Between the Lines” shows punctuation marks as symbols for how tone of voice, intonation, and feeling can sometimes convey meaning more than words can. Emotion can transcend vocabulary. We can read familiar experiences and patterns “between the lines” to translate meaning. Here, punctuation marks are paralleled with landscapes as similes, to imply a progression similar to the plot of a story, without words. Beginnings: quotation marks and fertile soil. Anticipation: question mark and climbing a mountain. More information to come: semicolon and a river. Settling into a lull: comma and period, and a valley. Climax: exclamation mark and a volcano. Denouement: ellipsis followed by period and closing quotation marks, and a landscape seen in its entirety.</image:caption>

<image:title>CURRENT WORK - Paper Dolls: Arizona Chain Gang Edition</image:title>
<image:caption>Paper Dolls: Arizona Chain Gang Edition What if We Told the Whole Truth About the Land of the Free Poster of computer-edited ink and acrylic, with accompanying stack of pamphlets Poster: printable at 18 x 24 or 24 x 36 Pamphlets: Informational paper doll booklets, 5.5 x 8 Paper dolls traditionally display either extravagant costumes from theatre, film, legend, or fashion, or the “perfect” girl from the “perfect” setting. In the United States, since the start of the 20th century, paper dolls have been used as a tool to teach a sanitized version of American culture. Here I use paper dolls for the opposite purpose: to show what some people avoid recognizing, or what they haven’t even heard about. Chain gangs were abolished in the U.S. by 1955. However, in the 1990s, they were reintroduced in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Oklahoma, Nevada, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. Most were cancelled within a year, but they continue in Arizona. Members work while chained together, each shackled by their left ankle to the chain. Members clear roadside land, and bury the county’s anonymous deceased in the desert heat. In 1996, the first American female chain gang was begun in Maricopa County in Arizona by the sheriff, Joe Arpaio. This is the sheriff, who, in 2008, and again in 2010, was found in violation of the constitutional medical rights of female and male inmates of Maricopa County Jail (2008 ruling by Federal Judge Neil V. Wake; 2010 ruling by U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals). Arpaio was then found guilty of racial profiling by first the Justice Department, and then by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in December of 2011. Human rights violations and racial profiling are concerns to be addressed, but Arpaio remains sheriff, has not stepped down, and has been allowed to continue practices like chain gangs. Arizona female chain gang members are not murders, embezzlers, or jewel thieves. They are small time violators of the law. They have problems relating to prostitution, drugs, and cars. They are not infamous. Violent people are under higher security, not on the chain gangs near the public. Art can draw attention to a topic. Here, the paper doll format in particular, with a figure and an overlaid costume, can suggest that these women are actual human beings, onto whom only one role as been projected.</image:caption>

The flying saucers “float” in a 1960s/70s outer-space atmosphere of color-changing fiber optic lamps, green light, and plastic sheeting. The saucers are: a yellow spaceship with pink wings, a blue-green jellyfish, two vinyl lps (reading “The Jimi Hendrix Experience” and “Low, David Bowie”), a clock, a chocolate donut with sprinkles, a red blood cell, eastern and western astrological wheels, a rainbow peace sign, a blue spider, a circular saw, and a lime green spoked wheel.

The vibrant peace sign hand reaches with a perspective that encourages the viewer’s eye to go beyond the canvas. I want to make a positive impact with this directness. Living in the United States, I’m aware of the role of the U.S. in supporting war and global inequality. If we want to survive financially, emotionally, spiritually, ecologically—if we want to live fully— we need to focus on the power of peaceful alternatives.</image:caption>

Our own survival is linked to the health of the land, our crops, our fresh water, the oceans, the air we breathe. <image:title>CURRENT WORK - Children's Book: Urban Wildlife</image:title>
